Relationships can be complicated
Every relationship goes through difficult periods. Sometimes the distance between two people grows gradually, through stress, life changes, unresolved conflict, or simply losing sight of each other. Other times, a specific event, a breach of trust, a loss, or a significant change brings things to a head quite suddenly.
Whatever is happening between you, it matters. And it deserves more than being left to work itself out.
Couples therapy is not only for relationships in crisis. Many couples come to us wanting to communicate better, understand each other more deeply, or navigate a transition together. Some come because they want to invest in their relationship before things become harder. Some come because they have already tried everything else.
Wherever you are - there is a place to start.
All couples welcome - inclusive and affirming space

Our Approach
Couples therapy at CAYH is collaborative, structured and grounded in evidence. We use Cognitive Behavioural Couples Therapy (CBCT) as our primary framework, an approach with a strong research foundation for helping couples understand what is keeping them stuck and find more satisfying ways of being together.
CBCT works with the patterns between partners the cycles that can feel impossible to break and helps shift them in ways that are practical and meaningful.
Alongside this, we draw on relational and attachment-informed thinking, recognising that what each person brings into the relationship - their history, their way of relating, the things they have learned to protect themselves - shapes what happens between you.
We work with both of you, together.
What to expect
Sessions involve both partners together. In some cases, a brief individual session may also be recommended alongside joint work, this is always discussed and agreed with you at the start.
Most couples begin with a block of sessions to allow the work to develop. The number varies depending on what you are working on and what feels useful.

Is couples therapy for you?
You do not need to be at breaking point to benefit. Many couples find that coming earlier, before patterns become entrenched, makes the work more straightforward and the outcomes more lasting.
If you are both unsure whether therapy is the right step, the initial consultation is a good place to start. It is a conversation, not a commitment. It gives both of you a chance to ask questions, get a sense of how we work, and decide together whether this feels right.
Getting Started..
01
Step 1: Getting to Know You Both
The first session is a chance for us to get to know your relationship, how you got here, what the difficulties feel like from each of your perspectives, and what you are both hoping for. You do not need to agree on everything before you arrive. Often the differences are exactly where the work begins.
02
Step 2: Understanding What Is Happening Between You
Together we begin to look beneath the surface at the cycles of interaction, the unmet needs, and the ways each person's history may be quietly shaping the present. This is often where something shifts. Not because we have the answers, but because being seen clearly as a couple can change what feels possible.
03
Step 3: Finding Your Way Forward Together
As we build a shared understanding, we work toward what you are both hoping for, using approaches that fit your situation and adapting as things shift. Some sessions will feel like real movement. Some will mean sitting with something difficult together. Both are part of it.
